Got bored and tried something different. Bought a spray bottle of Lysol 4 in 1 disinfectant, and a can of Lysol aerosol spray. Removed both cabin filters, turned on the blower, and sprayed 3 squirts down each side, then a generous blast from the aerosol can. I let the blower run for a couple minutes, then a couple more blasts from the aerosol. Let sit for 30 minutes, then ran the heater, with both passenger and driver settings on the 'hell' setting (and the same setting in i-drive - all red). Ran the AC for a while, then shut down the compressor (turned off the AC button). The funk would usually be in full effect. This time though, it smells fresh and clean .
(Couple of notes - spraying liquids requires care - don't go crazy, lest you wind up with a bigger problem than cabin funk!)

You do it through iDrive, but to get to it more quickly, just press the AUTO button on the climate controls to bring up the ventilation controls. Then bump the knob forward a click or two and scroll left or right to bring up Parked Car Operation.

a step through in my car:
push left to CC
up to get to the top menu
rotate right to get to the last menu item
push to enter it
here it is: clocks left and right, tick marks above it.
push, turn, push and so on to set the time and tick the mark above it.
little light under ventilation knob lights up red
at set time, ventilation starts and light flashes.
when finished (15minutes?) light is off. tickmark is off so it does not start again. Cannot set it to ventilate everyday at a set time.
if all else fails:
