Hi

I have a BMW 525D E60 2004 plate, eveytime I turn on the A/C or heaters I get a nasty smell coming from the vents, I have replaced the pollen filters and sprayed anti-bacteria down by the pollent filter shoot. but the smell is still there. Has anyone had the same issue and know of a way to resolve this?

Cheers

the dealer sprayed something in there that stinks in a different way.

better results were reported on using HG airco cleaner (can't find it on the HG.eu site in UK but surely you can get it there too.
You set it in the car, it creates a vapor which the airco (vents full open, recirculation on and full blower airco on) circulates through all vents and the cooling elements.

I had a similar problem with my '04 530i. Turns out I had several sources of "smell" that I had to deal with. Sources: Someone had the car detailed, including the engine compartment. That crap that they smear all over the engine to make it shine smells horrible and it was being sucked into the A/C. Second, I live in a very humid area so the carpet had aquired a nice little village of mold. Lastly, the evaporator had grown a colony of mold as well. Solution: I had BMW do their A/C cleaning service where they take stuff apart and get rid of all the little critters growing in the A/C system. I sprayed some stuff called FrigiFresh into the A/C intake by first removing the microfilters and running the A/C on full blast with recirculation mode off. I also vacuumed the heck out of the carpet. I vacuume religiously anyway, but for about a month I did a very thourough job every week. Then I bought this little bag of volcanic stone that is supposed to absorb odors (like baking soda in the fridge) and threw it under the driver's seat. I don't know for sure if the bag of rocks did anything, but the smell is completely gone from my car!! I don't know for sure if anything I did helped at all. It may have just been time that got rid of the smell, but at least I don't get hit in the face with that stench anymore when I open the door!

Hope at least some of this helps!! Good luck!

My service advisor mentioned it's best to turn off the A/C compressor before turning off the car to avoid this.
Would that really make a diff?
