I know that smelly a/c is a long standing 'feature' of the E60 and has been discussed many times on this forum.
I have had this problem several times and BMW fixed it by clensing the system (for free ? ). However, they did this last time and the problem came right back after aa couple of days.
One thing that I have noticed is that i dont get pools of water under by car after the a/c has been working hard which leads me to believe that the outlet vent under the car is blocked. BMW claim it is not although I dont have too much faith in my dealer
Any ideas ? Does the E60 normally vent A/C water under the car ?

Suggest you park the car on a flat hard surface, turn the a/c on full(min tem), and leave it idling for 5 minutes...there should be a puddle under the car.
Air con smells..
have a look at www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jk/020424.htm for a good description of why, and www.forteuk.co.uk/Air_conditioner.htm.

I think in my case this blockage is making the smelly A/C worse than 'normal'.

Just a thought...
there's another reason why you wouldn't get any condensate under the car....if the air con wasn't working , or only just working....
