A/C Evaporator... worst nightmare
 

Hi guys,

So, I bought my 545 from Copart last December, I was so happy with the performance of the car during the last 6 months, until this summer came in, so when I started to work on the A/C I found that the compressor belt was missing, so I ordered a new belt and it was a pain in the *** to put that belt in until I found that you need a specific tool for this model to install that strech belt.

In the end I installed it perfectly and recharged the A/C and then everything went well, it was working perfect for 3 weeks.

Then after those 3 weeks the A/C stopped again, so I recharge it again but this time the Freon leaked so fast in couple of hours only... so I decided to take it to an A/C Mechanic to inspect the A/C system... he pumped some Freon with dye, but he didn't find any leak and then told me that probably the problem is in the evaporator and he told me that he cant do it and I have to take it to a BMW specialist...

BMW specialist asked me 2500$ to fix this problem....

So please guys, tell me something from your experience to fix this problem more easily and CHEAPER options please !!

Well hope that is the problem after having to rip the inside of the car out to pieces .

I had to do the same job this spring when a mouse decided to build a stinky nest in my heater box during winter storage. I did the job myself. The car is a 2008 Z4, and the interior looked just like the one in the picture. It took me over a month to complete the job. I was so proud when everything worked when I hooked the battery back up! I had less then a half dozen screws left over when I was done!


Actually, the car in the picture still has a lot of work to do before the heater box can come out. The rusty metal tube has to come out, the steering column has to be dropped (it's attached to the tube), and the heater / A/C control wiring has to be removed.


If it is the evaporator that's leaking, this is the only way to change it out.


I think $2500 is a deal.
