No worries, Rudy. Look on the bright side. You'll be stepping into a 2008 soon without the GGT!

Guys, the GG tax was only on SMG and 6sp. Is it really gone on a manual tranny MY08 550i.

I don't think any of us is really sure (and I've got one on order!), but there's another possible explanation for the better mileage rating and elimination of the GG tax.

I thought that I've read in some of the LCI marketing literature that BMW has installed a dashboard light indicating optimum shift times. Well, if anyone else out there is as old as I am, you'll remember that that was a trick done in the 70s and 80s to push drivers to upshift early in order to increase gas mileage. It helped automakers get a better "Corporate Average Fuel Economy" or CAFE - and we enthusiast used to disable the light 'cause it drove us crazy (no pun intended). Anyway, such a light may be the basis for the improved mileage rating.

Does anyone else recall reading about such a light in the new 5er?

Yes. That is my understanding. The car I was considering ordering was a MY08 550 with manual.

On the manual MY08, yes it's gone. Not sure about the SMG.
