My Ride: 2005 545, Titanium Gray II, 6 Spd, CWP, Sat, LPP Laser Defense, V1 (hard-wired), iPod, 38% ceramic tint, CDV delete, H&R Street Performance Coil Overs, Forced Air Induction, DriveData Pro Camera System (4 cams), M5 Front Bumper
So... a local dealer told me yesterday that the EPA Gas Guzzler Tax on the 550 ($1,300 in MY07) has been rescinded for MY 2008.
If true, I'm sure there will be some pissed off MY07 owners when word gets out. I've still seen a fair amount of 07 inventory on many lots - all with a big $1,300 F.U. from Uncle Sam. That's going to be a challenge for dealers when they are sitting next to 08's that don't have that.
This may explain why I've also heard allocation is very tight for 550's for April and nearly non-existent (if not non-existent period) for March. I'm not sure about May.
Can anyone else confirm / validate?

My dealer told me the same thing. The explanation may be in the 08 product brochure which indicates that the 550's mpg ratings have increased by 1 - 2.
I recall that in 07, the M5 was about to get slapped with a $3,300 gas guzzler tax until BMW hastily talked the EPA into re-doing the test. After the 2nd or 3rd test, the results came in more favorably for BMW.
Who knows... maybe the direction of the wind on the test track that day??? Or maybe BMW lightened up the car... who knows. I'm sure all the folks ordering 08's are not complaining.
Interesting tho.

22.5 mpg is the magic number. If the car hits that number (or better), then no gas-guzzler tax...
The official 2006 number for the 550i was 21.0 so it's feasible that they hit the magic number with the new transmission, regenerative braking, etc.

Eh they always change it around... in 2004 the 545 SMG got slapped with a $1000 GGT. in 2005 it was gone... then for the 550 it got GGT again for the Manual and SMG and now its gone again.
