buying from a private seller
If this helps, just before the new year I picked up a CPO 2008 535i with 27000miles. Extended maintenance to 100,000 included, along with CPO warranty to 100,000, and gap coverage. I believe sticker was 27500 so I think you can get a better/safer deal out there somewhere.

I remember you guys say ask the dealer to inspect the car. How should I make the request? I have my eyes on this 2008 535i from a chrysler dealer. Asking them to do the inspection is counter-intuitive, no? Because they want to sell that car and PROBABLY skim over inspection and tell you everything is alrite? Is it possible to call into a BMW dealer and give him that car's VIN and get a service record?
I have a friend who is not a mechanic, but he likes doing his own brake pads and controller arms on his old lexus. Is it worth bringing him to take a look at the car?

Buying any use car,you gotta do things in a sequence
1)- Have BMW run a service history on the car to see how well it's been maintained.
2)-I personally don't like multiple owners and usually buy from the first owner.
3)- Have the dealer do an inspection for you to make sure all components are working.Should something goes wrong, you will have more recourse buying it from the BMW than buying from an indy.
4)- Even BMW does shit when it comes to doing a PPI  and please don't ask me how i know that. All those fockers do is to collect your money. However since they did do PPI they would have to back up the claim but with Indy, you are on your own.
5)-Always try to purchase a car with some sort of OEM warranty on the car.
6)- Before you make a deposit or make a commitment, have the dealer give you the paint meter reading on the car. Mechanicals be covered under the warranty but what about the painted panels.. I would never ever buy a used/new car with out checking it with the paint meter first. If the dealer doesn't do it then please,i insist, please find another car.
7)- Have dealer comment on the type of the tires and the condition of the tires and the brakes ?
Botttom line is:
If the car has a clean carfax/autocheck,has good service records,is still under factory warranty and passed the paint meter reading and has good tires/brakes then you are all set.
Hope it all works out.
Let me know if i could be of any more help.
