Expect to see a few HPFP on the car... After the pump failure reasons were identified it took several attempts to correct. They pulled and replaced the initial service parts but after the improvement changes started they determined the failure risks did not out weigh the cost of service replacement since it wasn't a clear 100% failure in all cases. Some have experienced it only once while others have had it multiple times. In the 08 models you typically see it replaces a couple times. Mine failed at 10K, and again at 27K and the last time was at 45K. I now have 93k and all seems ok. I'm really hoping that it goes out around 100K so I know then it's new and could probably expect it to last a lot longer. The last one seems to have lasted the longest so far so maybe it's one of the latest modified model of the pump. I've noticed that the 2009 & 2010 models are much better and we have never had a HPFP problem on our 535 F10's.

Two more things that you should be aware of is the Low Pressure Fuel Sensor & and the need for walnut blasting. The sensor will act just like the HPFP failure but is a lot cheaper to repair. There is a DIY on this site for this.

Walnut blasting since the car is direct injection. There seems to be a carbon build up that starts to be felt in a rough idle etc around 80K. There is a very good DIY on this site if you want to tackle it, otherwise I have heard the cost is around 500 or so.

These are the three main issues with the 535 that seem to be pretty common. Other than that, it's a great car, with great gas mileage. I get on average 25 with mixed driving and then 28+ on the highway typically running 80 or so and I would consider myself an average driver. Now if my wife takes it to work she downtown and the mileage drops to around 22, but she does not take any shit from anyone and I know she has a bit of a heavy foot. You can tune the 535 rather inexpensively such as a Burger JP4 and there are others as well. These will stick ~ 100 hp in there which is really nice. Or so they say, I have the JB4 and wouldn't have the car without it, or one of the other tuners.

It sounds like you're getting a pretty good price on it. If there is a BMW dealer near by maybe you can provide them with the VIN and asked how many times the HPFP has been replaced. They might tell you. Otherwise, if you like, shoot me the VIN and I can find out for you. This might give you an idea of your future possible failure (s). If it was replaced at low mileage and hasn't been replaced again I would say you might have one of the final pumps. Either way, like you've read on hear, they did extend the warranty to 110.000 or 10 years, at least that is what mine has.

Remember, a "good price" is relevant to who received it. If you feel you are getting a good deal and are happy, then it's a good deal regardless of what others say.

Thanks for your reply Tony. I sent you the VIN# hope you can give me the info. Our BMW dealers around the area are really pain in the butt.They wont give any info unless the car is under my name and I have to prove it as well. So I am waiting your help.

I bought this used with 125000 miles on it. What a mistake. Not only did I have to rebuild the transmission, but I neededucting to replace the fuel injectors.

As long as we're resurrecting 4 year old threads, my '08 535xi now has 210,000km on the clock and has origina coils, injectors and HPFP. Ticking time bomb? Or just a fluke? Who knows, but I get 10l/100im around town and it goes like a raped ape with the JB4.
