but wondering, how much is the lifetime transmission fluid and differential fluid change? and is it available with all BMW dealer?
My dealer would do it "reluctantly" at $800 for the transmission and $400 for the differential. They insist that it does not need to be changed and that doing it may do more harm than good. I don't buy it, especially at only 40K. I sent an email asking this question to Mike Miller at Roundel and he thinks it is bunk as well. I am looking at getting an independent to do it, but I am waiting for the E60 Bentley Manual to see what?s involved. I know for the transmission the entire pan has to be replaced because it has a built in filter so I can somewhat understand the price. I don't get why the differential is so high and maybe I can do that one myself.

I'm surprised - I thought most would advocate to get the warranty, which is basically just another form of insurance. I know repair costs are incredibly high for these cars, but $3K is a lot, I guess.

I agree with all previous sentiments. But I always buy the warranty, for the last 20 years, for Nissan x 2, Volvo x 2, Jeep, BMW x 3, Acura x 2 (4 drivers in the family). Peace of mind, I guess. I keep my cars to about 100k miles. I have always used it, on every car, on repairs that have cost more than the cost of the warranty. Except the BMW 08 535xi (just 2 years old and 35K miles) and BMW x3 2007 25k miles. Haven't needed it for the BMW's - yet.

You're right - I bought my car in August 06. Quoted pricing btw for those interested:

- BMW warranty: 7 years or 70K miles, covers everything including nav, $3,500
- AUL (Associates Underwriting Limited) warranty: 7 years or 75K miles, including nav, $3,299

It's possible to buy a cheaper warranty plan that doesn't cover the electronics - that puts the price in the $2,500 range.

I got a Comprehensive/Exclusionary Extended Service Agreement for 6 years after manufacturer warranty or 100, 000 miles, whichever comes first for $3,000. I got the coverage 1 year before my manufacturer warranty expired. It covers everything except body work, upholstery, wear and tear items (brakes, tires, etc..) It has a $100 deductible per incident. I bought the coverage through US Direct (Seller) and the coverage is via Southwest Re (Insurer). In Texas it cannot be called a warranty, it is called a service agreement.
