Hello,

I've had my car for about 9 months now and this is the second time in which I had to add a quart of oil because it was below the minimum on the dipstick. Is this normal for our e60 to burn oil every 4-5 months? I never had to add oil in any of my other cars.

Also, what type of oil does BMW use. Can I add 1 quart of Mobil 1 Synthetic ow-40 and mix it into the car? TIA

With a dipstick??

Oil consumption varies a lot with the kind of break-in you performed. If you are in the "I lease and get a new car every couple of years, so screw the break-in" club, your car will burn oil. On the other hand, if you are in the "I plan to drive this car for 10 years" club and behaved during break-in, your car will not burn any oil. YMMV.

I am those that are "drive my car till it dies" type, careful break in but still consume oil

Even with careful break-in, some cars just burn a little more oil than others. A lot of this might be down to manufacturing variances. Some engines 'bed down' perfectly as the metal parts wear into place but not all do. A careful break-in increases the chances that your engine will never burn a drop of oil but it is not a guarantee either.
My current and last car were turbodiesel. I broke both in with equal care; the previous car required a small top-up every 12,000kms or so and still does (my dad has it now); the current one has been very well behaved so far at 18,000kms.

It's normal and ok for large engines to require oil-top ups at the kind of frequency you are talking about.

Thanks for all yours replies.

So is it okay to add a different brand of oil into the car? From searching on this forum, Castrol is believed to be the brand that BMW use. Is it okay if I add MOBIL 1 ow-40? This is the brand that Benz use on their cars. TIA
