I know how you feel.

I was sitting in my car one time in a parking lot waiting for my wife - I stayed in the car because it was a tight lot and I was afraid of someone hitting the car. Anyway, I was reading something or other when a proximity sensor of some sort in my brain detected something coming towards my car. I looked up and saw this older guy backing his pick-up truck slowly towards me and by the time I realized he actually intended to hit me, I couldn't react quickly enough to turn the key and lay on the blower. I hopped out and let him have it but he just sort of pretended he didn't mean to do it and drove away. No damage fortunately but I think there are a lot of these people who park-by-feel.

I would stick on one of those bumper protectors you can pick up at the store, but i'm worried that once i decide to take it off, it'll leave a nasty residue, or worse, mess up the paint on the car!

I've used a thin layer of clear silicon to mount convex mirrors instead of the glue that comes with the mirror. The silicon just rubs off and leaves no damage. I've also used it to mount other accessories like reflectors with no damage to the paint also.
