By the way are'nt all new engine broken-in on a bench before being instaled in the car?

It is why break is not so important anymore.

Worth noting that the article EXPLICITLY STATES that the procudure is for 4 CYLINDER ENGINES.... do you have one of those in your E60?

The tranny adopts your driving style (shift points...).
Also your brakes need a little wear to be 100%.
Stuff like that.

You don't kill the engine if you just open it up from the beginning.

This topic has been debated for years. The break in period is not just for the engine, but for the entire drive train. My view is each manufacturer has a break in period procedure for some reason, and I've followed them with every car I've purchased.

If you decide to take what he says as true (I don't), then consider this quote:
"There's a very small window of opportunity to get the rings to seal really well ... the first 20 miles !!"

So unless you do this (according to him) in the first 20 miles, it doesn't matter. My car was delivered with 13 miles on it, which is probably about as low as you'll see, so I guess I was supposed to do this on the drive home from the dealer...
