By the book:

I tend to own my cars for a long time and have had no internal engine problems as a consequence. After break-in, I flog the car as hard as I want.

Oh, BTW I recall the advice of Deiter, my SA when I first got a 5er, he suggested that I should change the oil twice per cycle. He continued by saying I could pay him a little bit now and then, or a whole lot later when something blows up. I plan to change my E61's oil every 7,500 miles or so.

If you don't want to be adding oil for the life of the engine, break it in by the manual.

I always wanted to question you guys doing ED how can you drive on the autobahn with Nissan Micras passing you at 100 mph? What's the point then, if you cannot enjoy your BMW?

I think you should do ED, only after you break-in the car, of course if you are following the manual...

You can bet when I do another ED sometime in the future that I will not passed. Pedal to the metal...

I season the block so to speak, several short trips with time for the engine to heat and cool each trip. I never take it over the 3500 rpm level during this process. I usually do this about 1500 miles. I also change the oil in my cars every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Thusfar, I have never had a car that 1. burned oil excessively or 2. failed prematurely. I had a C36 for over 200,000 miles since new and drove the hell out of it daily. That is my plan for this 550i.

The staff at the European Delivery center encouraged me to go as fast as I want and taught me the way to safely cruise over 100mph without potentially damaging the engine.

There should be a 3rd option in the poll: drove normally. I didn't strictly follow the break-in guidelines, I drove normally. I personally don't put much stock in modern engines with their high tolerances requiring an extended break-in period. I don't think the manufacturers can be considered an unbiased source of information on the subject as long as they are paying for warranty work, of course they would love all of us to drive around at 10 MPH the whole time we are in the warranty period, it would decrease their rate of mechanical failure. Doesn't mean that the engine requires it. Just my 0.02.

I have my car leased for 2 years so my thought is drive it like a mad man and any problems that could arrise would probably happen down the road when i do not own it anymore. I know its not the best train of thougt, but that right pedal goes down quite a ways and my foot does not know half way.

I'm still messed up with those 2. I drove my car normally even used kickdown 1st at 900km. Reached 4000 rpm the same. Around 1500km i redlined it hard. I couldn't wait anymore and i'm sure that adopting a middle situation is the best. Babing the car is not so good.

My mistery still remains with those pedal to the metal, exhaust glowing hot from the very few km. I dunno, there are too many voices that have done it, recommand it, and some even got better engine results (i dunno if it's for the diesel also, my opinion it isn't) but for petrol engine i think it might be true. Especially for the M engines. What doy ou think?
PS: better engine results like better performance from the engine cuz of that "better sealing of the piston rings"

nice and soft break-in but with no manual !!! just by experience and best knowledge....
diesel cars with turbos are even more senstive to a proper break in...... everytime I've had a turbo exchanged on my Audi I did break-in again.....
