I have just finished my break-in, 2500mls now. My style is a bit different from the manuals, but I feel that the engine is pretty smooth to climb up to the rev limit now. If you would be interested in, please join this method.

"Ultimate break-in methodology" recommended by one of the certified chief instructor of BMW driving school.
Step1: rev limit of 3krpm ~300 miles
Step2: ~3.5k~600mls, Step3:~4k~900mls.....Step8:~6.5k~2400mls
Step9: keep always more than 3krpm~ for additional 200mls, total 2400mls
You will get an 'ultimate engine' around step 9 with extremely smooth climbing up to the rev limit. The gas milaege will also be better after 6krpm. The key is to hit the gas frequently up to certain rev limit step by step.

Sounds like ultimate BS to me. Ask him why Porsche redlines all their engines for five minutes before the car leaves the assembly line. Baby your car during break-in and your car will burn oil for its lifetime...this is a proven fact. I'm not going to redline mine until after break-in, but I sure am not going to go thru a 9 step waste of time either.

Welcom a board hagrock
Break-in is still recommended if you purchased, if leased, don't worry about break ins.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a lease. Redline, baby!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, got the car today, wow, sweet. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO KEEP A BMW 545i UNDER 4500 RPM WHEN YOU FIRST GET IT. I tried, and tried, but got a little over it a few times. Oh well.
What an incredible machine. I originally had my mind set on an Infiniti M45 Sport, but any color I wanted was sold out. That's ok, I don't think the combination of words "so, you settled for the BMW, huh?" have ever been spoken on this planet. The BMW dealer gave me a pretty sweet deal. $4,000 off sticker, $1,500 more for my trade than any other dealer, the free service, and with the residual on a lease, the BMW will cost almost $5,000 less to own for the next 3 years than the $8,000 cheaper Infiniti.
The auto writers who complain about the idrive must be real Einsteins. If I'm ever in an accident that leaves me brain dead, I could always get a job reviewing cars.

I also shopped a 545i against an M45, but my numbers did not come out like yours. The 3 year/45,000 mile residual on the M45 is 60%. The BMW is 59%. If you pay sticker for the $56,000 Infiniti with a .002 money factor, the payment is approximately $800 plus tax per month. The $64,000 BMW at a cap cost of $60,000 and the same money factor of .002 is about 12 bucks more per month plus tax. So if you got an additional $1,500 for your trade, you are saying that the Infiniti will cost over $3,500 to maintain over 3 years? Or did you get a super low money factor?

I'm a little jealous, because I thought I was saving a lot by going with the M45. It could be because I got a high mileage lease. I needed a 3 year/60,000 mile lease and the BMW was almost $150 per month higher based on the quotes from my local dealers. The BMW mileage penalty was twice as much as Infiniti's. Other than a few oil changes and some brakes, how am I going to spend so much on maintenance?

If iDrive is so bad, why is everyone copying it? I personally like iDrive and the system in the Infiniti is not that different. The only problem that I have with iDrive (in my wife's 530i) is the response time. With my Infiniti, you get an instant response. While the controller is located in a better spot in the BMW, the Infiniti's faster response makes it more enjoyable to use. I think the system in general will evolve to an even better level sooner than people think.

Are you telling me that you can get a money factor of .001, which is the equivalent of 2.4% interest? If that is the case, the base payment on the BMW would be $715 plus tax. Call me a skeptic, but that sounds too cheap to me...

E60 money factor until the end of March is .00140 and the residual is 61%
$4000 off MSRP with only security deposit etc... down should be about $775 a month.
