I should be getting my car tomorrow and i can't wait to run it
I'm just curious about the break-in period of the car, such as at what mileage(or kilometers) do i have to wait until i can truly test the performance of the car and if their are any other driving advice I should be aware of

The dealer told me to go easy for the first 1k miles. Drive at different speeds and rpms. After that then let her rip!

Some folks here let it fly as soon as they drove off the lot - haven't heard of any problems.

You can actually have a bad effect on the car if you are too gentle - the cylinder bores can get polished without enough force to create a perfect seal.

I'd say drive it like normal but don't absolutely hammer it for the first 500 miles.

You may want to Read The Fine Manual. But just to save your time it is 200 miles for tires, 300 miles for brakes and 1,200 miles for the engine and other moving parts. No hard acceleration or stops, RPM below 4,500, speed below 100 mph (160 km/h).

It is best to drive at a range of revs and speeds so that the engine cand bed-in over it's full operational range.

For the first 500-1000 miles however, you should avoid full revs and high speeds.

Check-out the owners manual or download one from this site, it will tell you how to drive the car initially to bed-in the engine.

From Mike Miller's Old School Maintenance Schedule:

"Break-in Service for New Cars: 1,200 miles
Traditionally, BMW performed a break-in service at 1,200 miles on new cars, which
included changing the engine oil and filter, manual gearbox oil, and differential oil. With
the advent of Free Scheduled Maintenance, BMW stopped performing break-in services
except on M cars...
I have seen that the engine and driveline oils in new modern BMWs are literally full of
metal at 1,200 miles ? as has always been the case with any new car. For this reason, I
recommend a 1,200-mile break-in service. Note: In case of automatic transmission, no
ATF and filter change is necessary at 1,200 miles.

As for break-in technique, my best advice is to break-in the engine over an extended road
trip comprised of as much mountainous terrain as possible, for as long as possible up to
1,200 miles, and keep the rpms within the limits BMW recommends.
I also recommend a 1,200-mile break-in service for rebuild engines and other rebuild
drivetrain components."

Congrats BTW.

Congrats! FYI, dealership personnel 85% of the time don't know what they are talking about. I've had some really fun encounters. I would obey the general consesus on this board.
