My dealer told me there is longer a break-in period when I picked up my May '05 545i.? I've been careful nonetheless.? I'll be pissed if I find break-in guidelines in the manual.

My dealer (sales guy) told me the same thing about new '98 528. I don't know if they just don't read the manual, or are trying to get us back into the showroom faster, but the inconsistency sure is annoying.

the dealer things seems to be out there - my dealer said "there is no longer a breakin period" - i pointed out the section in the manual (as i was aware of it) and he literally took me to a "senior" sales guy to get confirmation and the senior guy says not really, but don't abuse it!! I am following the manual to the T.

thanks,
edl

My dealer provided me the infos for break in : i.e. 2000km below 3K on the rev, no full throttle, vary speed on freeway, no DS mode on auto trans.
It is not a so long period to wait!

Please also note that he recommanded not to perform any "physic limit actions" before 500km because the tires and the brakes must be used before reaching their optimum capacity.

If we follow the book, ED would sucks on Autobahn. If you're leasing, why care for break-in?

If you follow the book you can still enjoy the higher speeds on the Autobahn,(that you can't in the States),just stay below 4500 RPM and vary your speed.don't keep it constant.
cheers

exactly vern and for diesel below 3000rpm and vary speed, the next day I received jumped from 150 to 210km/h but it was at 3000 so no problem otherwise cruise at 160-180km/h on the Autobahn only

I have 8,000 miles on mine, and I recommend never ever going over 55mph or 3,000 rpm. I plan passing mine down 5 generations. Good Luck!

I had the same question on this forum awhile back and raise some controversies. Since then, I've spoken to 2 senior techs. at 2 Houston BMW dealerships.

Tech 1: M sport engines break-in is revving to redline at every gear. Then get a oil change. Other BMW engines don't require break-in, but recommend to potential reduce warranty repair cost in the 4th year. The latter statement was off the record.

Tech 2: You don't have to follow the manual for break-in to the "T" , but we don't recommend you to drive "aggressively" or too "docile" during the first 1200 miles since all the parts do need to work with each other. I would recommend it.

My reason is that if BMW truly has a "break-in" period for their regular engines, then they should recommend an oil change soon after. No, your next synthetic oil change is around 15K miles or 1 year. You'll find people on this same board who will swear on both sides of this "break-in" issue. As for me, I kept he second advice in mind and and drove the car as I normally do - not aggressive and not docile during its first 1200 miles.

This break-in time is driving me mad! I already think that the 525 doesn't really have enough power to satisfy me, so I want to open it up, but I can't. Really driving me crazy. The book says 2000KM and I am only at 1,100. Will go on a longer trip tomorrow to try to rack up some kms.

By the way, I have revved it up to just over 4,500RPM about 8-10 times so far and backed off immediately once I realized it.

Finally, you know how you can limit the cars top-speed within i-drive, can you also limit the accellerator for us heavy footed drivers?
