My Ride: 2015 535D M Sport
Read your Owner's Manual. Basically, it's 1200 miles at no more than 4.5K RPM, as I recall, with a gradual increase after that. But you also have to pay attention to MPH, brake usage and tire stress for the first few hundred miles. It's all in the book.

My Ride: 2004 545i - 6 speed manual (July 04 build), silver-grey/black, sports package std equipment (18", active roll, active steering, adaptive headlights), premium sound, bluetooth enabled, folding rear seat, lumbar, 3m hood/bumper protective film, rear tint, euro reflectors.

For what is worth, being easy on the car for the first 2000 miles can pay dividends down the road.
Basic rule of thumb, go easy on it - no wide open throttles and vary the engine speed on the freeways - i.e. don't set the cruise control and just drive.

I think the suggested 1200 mile break-in is about 600 miles more than necessary.

[/quote]Vary the speed, don't floor it, keep it under 4500 rpm. Brakes take a few hundred miles to seat properly. If you do it right, you gas mileage and acelleration performance will improve slightly after a thousand miles or so. Read any of the long term car tests - it takes a while for the engine to 'loosen up', and if you abuse it during this period, you won't see any gains.

[/quote]I'm right at 1200 miles, and as much as I want to really let 'er breathe, I'm going to slowly increase my revs and RPM's. There is a reason the mfg. suggests the process they do. I'm leasing, and dont want any problems for myself due to negligent driving while new, but also feel better knowing that when BMW gets this 545 back, I took care of it.

My dealer told me there is longer a break-in period when I picked up my May '05 545i. I've been careful nonetheless. I'll be pissed if I find break-in guidelines in the manual.
