Is this the same Canadian dealer that charges $15 for loaner cars?
My SA told me same thing - that it was wear and tear and that I would have to pay. I complained that 25,000 km wasn't nearly enough to require new pads and SA said "they wear quite quickly". When they took a look though, there was 9mm left on the pads so noise was due to a defect and they were replaced (with a new kind of pad apparently) under warranty. It was a nice surprise.
"wear and tear"?? There is no Free Maintenance for 4 yrs/50000 miles service in Canada?
I guess I'll revisit my SA today

I have the same problem. I'm in Switzerland. Asked my dealer and they said it must be the brake pads and I should wait until it's time to get them changed. The new ones will be OK.
But after what I'm reading here I'm not sure. Car is already out of warranty.

I searched around and pulled up Service bulletin SIB340206 dated March 2006 about the brake squeal. Stated in this document was that the dealer was to install a new brake pad sensor in case of customer complaint of brake squeal. So, I bring this to my dealer along with my other problems (sunroof, headlight aim) and my service adviser tells me theres a new SIB that states that the customer needs to pay for this to be done. It sounds like a load of sh*t to me - does anybody know the truth?
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!
Depends on the level of squeel, a light squeel that can only be heard with the window down and can be removed by a couple of hard braking sessions is not a defect, it is pad glazing and it happens.
If on the other hand it is loud and cannot be solved by a couple of hard barkes from speed, take it back, it will be the fault.

I have this problem on my X5, (a high pitched whine), but only when it is in reverse! It gets loud enough that people standing around the car stop and stare to see what is making such a noise! BMW actually replaced the pads last week as a kind gesture claiming that it wasn't a "Real" problem. Predictably enough, the car with fresh pads front and back (sensors too), made the same noise! It must be a brake pad dragging on the rotor, but they seem uninterested in diagnosing it and fixing it, BTW, the car never made this noise during the first few months of ownership! Oh well time to start chasing my tail again!

How loud is the squeal, Mine was loud enough to turn head throughout a parking lot.
It occurred after I stopped at a 4way and I heard a faint POP then phzzz, not thinking it was my car I motored on and 25 yards later "SQUEEEEEEL" I pulled into the gym and parked the car, looked at the front left, nothing as far as I could see, got back in the car backed it up, (Silence) monved forwared (Squeeeel), backed it up again and then forward, to my amazement, no squeal.
I have been squeal free for quite sometime now.
It is at the dealer w/ a list and that is on it.
