Get a second opinion. Find a reputable independent shop in your area and have them take a look at it.

I would not let an indy shop do the work.

I could understand that if the car is still covered by BMW. If it's not however, as long at the shop has certified BMW techs it shouldn't be a problem. I had no problems with the shop I've used and they have done some major work on my car. Going to the dealership your just another customer, a number. My indy shop knows me by my first name.

I had mine done by a BMW independent shop that also replaced my timing cover gaskets, oil pressure O-ring and plugs for $1400.00 total. Did a good job too. Dealer quoted $2300. Feel around the back of the valve covers with your fingers when the engine is cold to get an idea on how bad the leak is. It's easiest if you pull off the plastic covers. it just may be seeping slightly and getting things dirty. Mine were leaking pretty bad and my fingers were wet with oil when I checked. I was also leaking at the alternator mounting seal that the dealer missed when they inspected.

I agree ... an experienced BMW indy can handle a job like this easily; It's a frequent issue with later model BMW V-8s.
