As I approached 69K miles, my front brakes cried out for replacement. Certainly they lived a healthy life being the original brakes. I had the dealer perform the $1K service (ouch!) and reset the maintenance indicators. The new front brakes are showing a 25K remaining milage. Since the original pads lasted multiples longer and the replacement cost is so high I am wondering if something funny is in play. I understand the remaining wear milage predictor is just an educated estimate by the computer but the difference between original and replacement is substantial. Any thoughts?

Remaining miles on brakes shown on iDrive is an estimation. Actual miles you get will depend on the type of driving you do (high way miles with less braking vs. local driving with lots of braking).

^Agreed. When I got my front pads replaced at the dealership under warranty, the I-Drive first indicated 28k miles and it kept getting extended slowly. Now it has stopped at 48k miles remaining.

are you saying that you got 69k out of the original set of brakes?k.

I have a very hard time believing it. We had our pads and rotors replaced at 50k and I just had to replace both pads and rotors again at 77k. Not overly aggressive driving and 75% of it is my wife driving.

We have a 550i

Thanx for the feedback. Yes - I got 69K out of the original front brakes. The rears are also still original factory brakes and not due for another 5K. BTW - we got over 100K on my wife's Volvo V70 before the brakes needed a refresh.

I suspected the computer would adjust the milage remaining to a longer life span but I appreciate the confirmation. Nobody flinched at the $1K brake job cost - was your costs similar? Sounds high. BMW=bring more money? Just kidding - love the car.

wow....amazed at 69k miles on front brakes. I know on my Denali we sold it with 55k miles and original brakes. However, on the 5-series, 25-30k seems more normal.

I was shocked at replacing rotors on the BMWs.

On costs, yes, very expensive maintenance. I did my own front brakes and rotors recently. Spent $300 on parts.
