I am getting a service warning Due for Brake Fluid on my 2007 525XI i-Drive, I located the Brake Fluid Gage under the Cabin Filter (pain to look for it) i notice the type should be "Dot 4", the question I have:
Can I use any after market Dot4 fluid or has to be BMW brand?
should I top it up or drain it and add new Fluid?
Thanks

The brake fluid service is for the fluid to be replaced not topped up.

Regular fluid flush of your brake system is recommended every 2-3 years. Your iDrive service indicator is letting you know it's that time! There are some DIY tips posted in the forum.

If your car is still covered under the maintenance program, why not have the dealer perform the service? You've technically already paid for it.....

No just 15K higher than my warranty. sucks. I have done spark plugs, Micro and cabin filter change myself so I will look at DIY hopefully can find show to flash it myself. Can I use dot 4 after market?

Normally its not covered because by the time you need it the mileage is over the warranty period. The dealer charge $240 to do the work, which is service your brake fluid.

Any 'Dot 4' fluid is ok. Don't bother paying main dealer inflated prices.

Don't bother spending big bucks on Motul, Castrol, or fancy gold brake fluid
This is good enough for one full day at the track so it's good enough for street use.
You can find it at local Autozone

(price may have changed)

I picked up a bottle of Castro Dot 4 from Local Auto parts shop. where can I find "How to flash" so i am planning to flash it once I get home this evening? or I can top it up until weekend we will be expecting a sunny day in Toronto and it would be good time to get my hands dirty under the sun!

It doesn't need topping up unless you have a brake warning up. The brake fluid service indicator is only telling you it's time to change the fluid, not it's low.
