Default Boot latch issue - saloon

Went out to the car the other day and the boot would not open via the extended press on the fob, nor the button on the lid itself. I had to use the actual key (no dramas) but then it would not close. After some swearing and head scratching I realised that the keeper part of the latch was not closing. Even when I used a screwdriver to try and physically close it, the keeper would not stay in place, springing back to the open position. When I disconnected the small electrical plug from the latch mechanism, I was able to close the keeper manually. I thought a replacement unit would solve the problem, but nothing has changed. There is also a small plug at the keyhole mech.
Has anyone had a similar issue? I guess it is possible that the replacement unit is also faulty, but I doubt it. I was also getting the number plate bulb error which I assumed was due to the fact that I had to disconnect the plug at the latch in order to close it, but perhaps not?
It has been suggested the wiring from boot to car can get broken due to constant movement, and on inspection where it meets the body is the only area I could foresee potential damage, but it is so well wrapped?
Also, I cannot see a fuse listed for the boot lock?
Any advice or pointers very gratefully received.
Thank you.

More than likely, broken wires in wire bundle from trunk to trunk lid in area of hinge. Wires break from fatigue.

Yes I think that's most likely, unfortunately! Where the trunk cables meet the main loom is almost like a fixed point?
I didn't really fancy starting to unravel it all, but I guess it may be the only option.
Has anyone any experience of having made this repair?
