hi,

while driving my new 550 today at near-idle, 10-15 mph, the engine started bonanza-ing, making very rapid revshifts between 600 and 1000 rpm. does anybody know what might be wrong?
car has autogear and only 600 miles on it.

There have been some Step anomolies with the 550i. I have not heard of your problem. For now, I'd play like it didn't happen. You know; just go into full denial. If it happens again, then I'd take it to my dealer.

My friend's 650i sometimes does the same thing but while the car is stopped and in park (the RPM cycles between about 600 and 1000). If he revs the engine a couple of times it stabilizes, but sometimes it repeats the cycle after a few minutes. I think there is a fix for this in CIP (Progman) 20. It seems like your's was doing it while the car was actually moving, but since it's in the same RPM range it may still be related to the same issue.

Isn't this a symptom that one of the recent code updates corrects? Surging at idle?

got the car delivered last week, late december 2005 manufactured (week 51), so I would be surprised if it did't have the most recent software.
maybe somebody could tell me how to check?
