Hi,
I've always wanted a 5 series, and finally I think I might be about to purchase in the next few months! I've never owned a BMW before so I don't know what to expect. So I wondered if someone could answer a couple of questions for me please?
- I'm looking at a 530d E60, around 5 years old maybe. I notice quite a lot are what I consider high mileage i.e. 100k+ so I'm a bit hesitant. I've never bought a car over 80K miles. Though saying that we currently have a 2001 Ford Focus 1.8 petrol and that's on 130K... every mechanic so far after driving was surprised at how good it is for age and mileage. I want something that's going to last a while, so what are your thoughts on what is classed as "high mileage" for an E60.
- Does anyone have/know of a list of common problems with the 530d E60? I've done a search and see lots of problems but I guess the majority are not common.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Jason

Private sale or are you buying from a dealer?
A private sale would be a plus if the previous owner kept repair and maintenance records.
What you have to ask yourself is do you have either the know-how or money to pay for the service and repairs when they are required?

Hi, thanks for quick reply!
I don't think it will be a BMW dealer, they are overpriced from what I can see. So the options I have are private sale, or general car sales guy. Private sale as you say I'll make sure I can get full service history. General sales guy might offer warranty depending on the company I guess. I've looked into the cost of running the 530d, spoken with my regular mechanic and it sounds like it's not going to be that much more expensive. I have limited technical knowledge. I know how to top up oil, water, change/clean air filter etc etc.
