BMW valve damage
#1
I experienced valve damage while downshifting my 2008 528i 6 speed manual. Has any one else heard of similar problem. Is there any service bulletin on this issue. BMW seems reluctant to cover the repair. OUCH. The car seemed to be low on power the last few weeks and has only 9k miles and had not been in for service yet since new. Any help out there on how to deal with this major repair!!!

Hate to tell you, but this is generally not covered under warranty and there would be no service bulletin or anything to help either. Not a fault of the car's design -- a rev limiter can protect during acceration, but on a missed downshift there is no way to stop the built up energy from potentially doing damage.

How much does BMW want to charge you to repair the damage?
What did you tell the dealership? If you told them that you experienced this while downshifting, they're going to say that you over-rev'd the engine and stick you with the bill.

Sounds like an overrev by improper gear selection on downshift. Doubt any car company will foot the repair bill for such a blatant driver error. No, it's not because the rev limiter didn't do its job - not designed for this type of situation. Good luck, I think the best you can hope for is to cut a deal for the repair.
