No, more is not needed. I think the 20 second figure is the threshold after which you're using more fuel than restarting.
I just saw some TV show saying that the US uses 10% of its gasoline idling at red lights.

When I lived in N Virginia, Fairfax County to be exact, the lights were reversed and called 'calming' lights. This forced drivers to stop at red lights instead of allowing them to move on through at an even pace.
I live in Jersey now where nothing makes sense.

Its been reported here in the UK that BMW will adopt the Bosch stop/ start system to save fuel while stationary from next year including the 7,5 & 3 series. It is claimed this will give approx. 5% fuel savings overall.
Only Citroen uses a fuel saving system like this currently.

Diesel engines use much less fuel while idling, compared to gas engines. I'd rather go diesel and avoid the extra complications associated with such stop/start system.

20 secs to start up that 4.8L 550? YA RIGHT. hahaha
Not sure what you're trying to say. Maybe you're just trying to be funny. We were talking about the engine (any engine) taking a bit more gas at or immediately after startup. Specifically, when it would make sense to stop the engine and start it again, knowing that starting it takes some extra gas. Since BMW recommends turning it off if you'll be sitting longer than 20 seconds, it's probably safe to surmise that starting the engine takes less fuel than running the car for 20 seconds.

Hehe ya I was trying to be an idiot...
saying the 550 sucks up so much gas that a start will prob drain the whole tank cuz the engine is so powerful... I guess i should have used the M5 as an example instead.
Personally I rather burn more fuel than to start and stop the engine so many times. Seems like the more you use somthing the sooner its going to fail. * I dunno. *
