Basically I need to get my valve cover gasket replaced and wanted to get my oil + oil filter changed and coolant flushed..
What are your thoughts on taking BMW's to non-BMW specialist for this kind of job? Is it me does the oil filter look different to most other makes?
Does this job require any special tools or knowledge before doing, or even BMW servicing in general?

In most cases, anything related to car computer won't be touchable without proper software. And generic ones aren't recommended as you won't get anywhere.
Manual work on the other hand should be fine, but knowledge and in some cases; special tools, are extremely recommended. You don't want someone to learn how to go through the engine on your car!
That said, I take my car to a European Vehicle Specialist, they deal highly in Euro made cars. So, only go for BMW approved or Euro Specialist Shops and you should be fine. That's what I've been doing. Hope this is of help
