Don't know if it can be retro fitted but it would be nice to have if you needed to pick up email while traveling. Here's a little more info:

Would be nice if they actually had the service in Australia. They sell some models saying you get 1yr free subscription and advertise it on the website, BUT, its not available and hasn't been all year. My dealer says it may not be.

VERY poor BMW! I am considering complaining to ACCC as they should not be misleading everyone like they are...

Had Online retrofit in my UK 520d SE (2006) today. The price was as per the price list, ?300, no labour charge. If you have Professional Radio (which means you have Assist), I believe, then you have a SIM chip already installed. Fair Usage Policy applies, that said, it's quite slow (GPRS). The whole "Online" experience is WAP based, and only through the BMW portal. The initial ?300 buys you 6 months 'free' usage, after which you pay ?120/year for more 'free' usage.

My interest wasn't so much the WAP surfing (eg, news headlines, weather, etc), but more the Address Book and Email. The bmw online web site allows you to manage your address book (and import from Outlook), and once the address book is loaded into the WAP portal, you can surf/search from the car. Once you identify an entry, you can "Navigate" to the address, call any of the phone numbers, and, send an SMS (although not sure if it's possible to receive one back). With an Online subscription you also get an email address at the bmw-online.co.uk domain, but you can also configure "external" mail boxes (supports POP3 and IMAP). I just configured my POP3 server and it proceeded to attempt a download of 4,900 emails. Needless to say I aborted the process. There seems to be little control over what it will download (I was hoping it would do the "top N" emails), so I need to investigate this further.

If anyone has any queries, please let me know and I'll test it..
