If you have the pro navi then I think it's quite good (but I am in the UK). The business navi isn't very good though from what I have found.

The only reason I like the NAV OEM is because of the larger LCD in the vehicle which I think really adds a touch of class to the vehicle. As a standalone NAV solution, I agree - it needs a lotta help. But compre it to vehicles without NAV that have a smaller screen and oodles of plastic around the side of their iDrive display, and I'd pay the extra for the wider screen anyday!

Have just changed from an E39 M5 with widescreen and MK IV DVD sat nav to the BMW Pro in an E60 535d. It has the second generation iDrive (05 model), but with current software update (now the manual doesn't agree with what you see!)
I find the first route calculation VERY slow in comparison to the Mk IV - recalc seems fine though. Is this normal?
I have the original 2005-1 Pro DVD and would like to upgrade, but have heard that the latest 2008-2 DVD is dual layer and cannot be used in the 2008-1 players or earlier? Is this true?

I don't have Nav on my car. Instead I bought a Garmin Nuvi for a tenth of the price of the BMW's Nav. Never regretted that move for one second!

Hi
Your best bet is to get a Nav software update and then get a 2008 nav copy + camera locations , you will notice changes instantly.

is anyone else ABSOLUTELY hating the navigation system that comes with BMW? ...
The second thing I hate about it? It doesn't tell you where your destination is! My 300M Special would tell me "Your destination is [x distance] on the [right, left, or straight ahead]", even into/through the parking lot to the establishment if the parking lot was a large one. This thing just says, "You have arrived." What?? Where is it?? Not very good when the place you want is tucked away in an obscure position. They might as well add a second part that says, "You're own your own now, buddy!" My most vivid memory of this was when I was dropping my kids off at a birthday party. It was being held at a strip mall. The establishment was tucked away deep in the corner and wasn't very conspicuous from the road. I drove past the place 3 times until the kids finally decided to make themselves useful and help me spot it! This was back when the gas prices strapped on booster rockets and really started taking off on a daily basis, and I had just gotten an enormous crack in the windshield the day before. Needless to say, I wasn't to happy...

Have just spoken to BMW UK and they have said that a 2005 and later Pro Sat Nav should read the Dual Layer 2008-2 DVD, so hope thay are right. Apparently the dealers don't always understand this, so can give poor advice.
The E60 Pro is nothing like as good as the E39 Mk IV High - that seemed to know exactly where a particular house was, not just 'you have arrived'! If this is progress, it shouldn't be too long before we are back in the Stone Age!
