I have the same question as Dragon. This doesn't have the embedded chipset in the key, nor does it allow for programming and decoding that. I mean, if someone wants to get in your car that bad, they'll find a cheaper way than spending $900. Unless someone is just snooping through your things and trying to be covert. Eh, either way, I'm not overly concerning about this. There will always be lock picking sets out there for all new locking technologies.

Interesting.

The video will not make a jot of difference to anyone that buys a lock and looks at it. As most professional crooks will.

The really worrying aspect is that there are effectively only 256 ((4^2)^2) half-step key combinations required because of the poor manufacturing precision. If the tolerances on the locks were tighter, then you would need the full 65,536 ((4^4)^2) set of keys, meaning 256 pairs (left/right). Not impossible, but harder to carry around, and three times as likely to make a mistake in the coding (with 2 half levels, as long as you don't mistake a 3 for a 2 or viceversa, it does not matter).

The real question is - what sort of checks are done on the customers of the tool-making firms?

On the other hand, if BMW used split-pin locks... there would be other ways to pick them. And there's always brute force. All we can hope for is that the picking process is laborious and noticeable enough that most would-be thieves would think twice about starting.

Is it a different key for door and starter? If not whata's the problem in starting the car?

Not talking about the "stop/start" button models here.

So how is it that they get away with covering the entire set of sloppy tolerances with just 16*2 L/R keys?

Precisely that way. You will notice there are exactly 256 ways of combining 2 sets of 16 options each.

Watching the video now. This is scary stuff. I am not sure that I feel great knowing that someone can only open my door, trunk, glovebox, etc.

Best,
