i wish i could see albums folders after selecting an artist in mp3-2.
I recall that with the most bus iPod adapter you could not see albums under artists. With the '08 USB/iPod adapter, when you select an artist, you can then select an individual album or select ALL to see all songs.
I don't recall having any issues with lists over 255 entries with either version. However for the most part, I have created playlists shorter than that simply because the time it takes to scroll thru them. For larger groups of songs I've split them up to something like "hard rock 1", "hard rock 2", etc.
Also since I have an X3 with a more primitive adapter, I keep around playlists BMW1 thru BMW5 and limit their songs to the best ones to fit on my 2GB Nano that stays in the X3.
One last thing. In both cases (most bus adapter that was in the 650i and the USB adapter option in the '08), Random works from any song list. Simply click on a song while playing, scroll down the popup to "random", and click. Its not as "predictive" as the iPod shuffle but it works.

I have had the adaper with a '06 non-nav car and a nav one. Here are the top 3 things that suck about the ipod adapter:
1. The 255 limit is a real limitation. For example I want to listen to the Rolling Stones, but I can't because if I go to artist (CD2) I can only scroll into the "N"s then the limit is reached. I can go to CD3 (Album) and listen to Beggars Banquet.....but won't get to say Voodoo Lounge.
2. Really slow to load upon start up or when switching from CD2 to CD3
3. You need to scroll from the "A"s every time - you spend more time scrolling than listening and in heavy traffic it requires to much scrolling to be safe so you end up listening to the same songs over and over even though you theoretically have 4,000 songs at your fingertips.
That said still better than CDs. If you have a big music library you really need to manage a set of "driving" playlists or you will go insane from scrolling.

I assume you mean using the most bus adapter and selecting CD2 for artists? Have they changed the SW to now show MP3-2?
i wish i had the folder option after artists. but it beats anything else i couldve gotten, i think.
