New news to me though - thanks for posting this.
The first thing that came to my mind when saw the post title was the introduction of EfficientDynamics, which they also themselves state was a key factor. Smart move by BMW and excellent timing. It should keep them ahead for the near future. I know the VAG group and Benz have a few "efficiency" offerings, but very limited and nothing as enticing in the premium categories or larger engines as what BMW offers. Lexus is probably the only other manufacturer that comes close at the moment, but in Germany the brand image isn't strong enough to really compete with the likes of BMW, Audi and Benz.
It will be interesting to see how this all develops throughout 2008...
