U.S. Government Mandates New Fuel Efficiency Standards

The U.S. government unveiled new fuel-economy rules that will have a dramatic impact on Americans? automotive purchasing habits. According to a joint statement released by the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation, cars for the 2016 model year will, on average, have to be 34% more efficient than current models, averaging 35.5 mpg (6.6 l/100 km). Interesting read about the technology.

However, the fuel economy mandates are oppressive, and without good reason. People really believe increased fuel economy in America is going to save the world when countries such as for example China have a permanent smog cover over their major cities (not picking on China, I do not mean to offend anyone) are chasing rainbows. In the end, all of these fuel economy mandates will result in higher costs transferred to the consumer, and thats about it.

Not good in my opinion

Can't really agree here - doing what one can in the U.S. to decrease oil usage and dependency is still a smart move. We can't control what other countries do.

I agree with jspira.
We will all pay one way or another and grumbling about other countries not doing their bit whilst doing nothing yourself will only bring accelerate the problem. Don't forget that the Europeans have been pushing this for some time and did not let the lack of cooperation from the US stop what they have been trying to achieve. Now that the US has woken up it is their duty to work with the likes of China to convince them to do the same. WE all owe our future generations the oportunity to live as comfortably as we do!

Rant over
