While my car was in service today I got a E46 318i coupe with manual transmission as a loaner today.
I used to have a 330Ci Convertible before my E60 so stepping back in the coupe was a familliar sight for me.
The difference in ride and comfort was striking for me. While the 5 makes me want to cruise and take it easy the 3 series made me want to drive it more spiritedly. I really had to get used to the manual of the coupe again. The ride was kinda harsh and uncomfortable and it is so small inside. Don't want to offend anyone but the 5 series is definately a 10 times better car and much more relaxing to drive. I was really happy to be back in my own car and will never regret I chose the E60 as a new car and not another E46.
btw. Talking about stupid. I am so used to the automatic that I start while pushing the brake pedal and then put it in D to drive off.. I also tried it in the manual 318 while it was parked in first gear.. Imagine me hopping along the parkingspace of a clients office while the car is making horrible noises.. the people inside the office were looking at me if I was an idiot, and I felt like an idiot too..
Then I just drove off pretending nothing happened

I'll bet the ride quality in the new 3 Series is going to be a lot nicer than previously when it hits the streets next year.

I think this is very true. I went from a Seat Toledo V5 to an BMW 330 and the step up was hughe for me. Now I have an E60 and again the step up in comfort and driving experience is very big.
I think we get spoiled by the way our cars drive and if you step in an older model or different brand the differences become obvious. I just wonder what the step up to the E60 is???

Talking about big changes.. My last car (except a Mercedes e320 on petrol I had for a few months) was a VW Passat 1.9 TDI 60 kw (90 hp) built in 1997. I really was very pleased with the car. Didn't feel the need for a lot more power..
Now.. this one.. 530d and 218 hp....

They do.. even if you want a 316 it is still possible.. You get a tuned down version of the 318. Same engine lower output.
