I agree that the M3 does have more BHP and the 0-60 is 0.2 secs faster. But wouldn't the 545 take it after that??
According to the figures in these links below, the E46 M3 SMG hits 60mph in 5.0 seconds and the E60 545i SMG takes 5.6 seconds.

I selected SMG on both to make the comparison fairer.

I believe both cars weight in the 3700 lb category and M3 has about 10 more HP but at 8500rpm.

there are plenty threads about 545i/550i vs m3.... some of them:

There is no way the 545i's 0-60 is just 5.6
There are reported runs of 4.79 0-60 with the 545i.

Take out the floor mats and you'll be beating Veyrons.

I have both (M3's a coupe however) and both are 6 speed manuals and there's no doubt the M3 is faster. Takes more to get a 545i off the line..tough car to launch, the M3 is simple. No dout an M3 race.

Are you go by how you feel while accelerating? Because what you feel can give you very wrong "feeling".
I feel my friend's stock s2000 so much faster than my 545i but is it? More stiffer setting, lower seat position,
louder exhaust & engine note, high revving engine etc from M3 will give you the feeling of faster than 545i.

But since I never raced an M3 yet, I'm gonna go by logic what I gathered from e60.net
We had a good amount of 545i vs 550i and we concluded that it's a driver's race.
According to the mags, 550i is capable of running 13.2s(motor trend I think).
Stock m3 coupe is capable of running 13.2s as well. So, if my logic isn't flawed, it will be a driver's race.

However, OP asked m3 convertible. From the magazine, it ran high 13s.

I was neck to neck with an e46 M3 last time. This was before I had my Dinan ECU remap and RPI scoop and that's also when I had the infamous AFE intake.

EDIT: Just remembered. I had the DINAN but didnt remove the AFE and install the RPI scoop.

No man, you are not considering a pair of points:

a) 6 MT /SMG has a LOW final drive ratio, so performance discrease

b) in the 0-60/0-100/0-whatyouwant, the SMG2 of the M3 has a real LC, not an acceleration assist as the SMG of the 545i.

c) Limited slip diff

About 0-100 (real, calculated with clips, frames and to 102 kmh of speedo), with old gears (stock gears, stock ratio in the diff), by best was 5.7s, so 5.5-5.6 in the 0.6 .

It's a LONG time that I don't try a LC, but now with 3.15 ratio and the Quaife I surely would obtain a better result.

Let me reinstall summer tires, get a new remap (gone after Progman update), etc. and I will try a LC again.

Edit: if it can help, I smoked an E46 M3 cabrio time ago (surely 6 MT).
