I know it's common to put "steelies" on a vehicle in the winter on which to mount snows so your regular rims don't get degraded from all the salt, ice, and snow that you have to drive trough in northern climes.
That being said, you're driving a BMW for christ's sake. Spend a little more and get some cheap alloys that you can slap on so at least the appearance of your ride isn't degraded. You can generally get some good deals on Craigslist as long as you're careful to watch for fitment.

As previous poster, I too encourage you to buy 16" (Style 134 fits for sure) or 17" set of alloys for winter.

there is absolutely NO need to do 16s or 17s in the winter. I used 18s and now 19s in the deep snow and I have 245s front and 285s rear--with conti DWS. 18s and snow tires you would be a monster in the snow.. absolutely not necessary to get small wheels or thin wheels
YOu can buy a great set of VMR wheels for 1000 bucks if you must have a dedicated set for winter--I use my VMRs year round and they have not peeled or chipped or anything after 3 winters/summers in a row---at 1000 bucks you could just replace them every 3 or 4 years rather than buy 2 sets
16 inch steel wheels will look absolutely ridiculous--the car doesnt even have large brake discs but even the size they are probably wouldnt fit within a 16 incher wheel
