I was just reading a review of the 318d (compared to Mercedes and Audi diesels) and the reviewer commented on the complexity of Audi?s MMI, noting the relative simplicity of iDrive.

SERIOUSLY!!!! I'm starting to not bother to read some the reviews because they still complain about the iDrive... when I get to that sentence it just ticks me off and I close the magazine and not even bother finishing the article... IF they cant even fairly judge iDrive I dont think they can fairly judge the cars...
I forget which one but just recently reading Automobile, MotorTrend, Car and Driver or one of those car magazines that I subscribe to comparing the M3 with the C63 and the RS4 they say that BMW was good blah blah blah and started to complain about the iDrive... I just closed it and stopped reading...

I get tired of the car mags ragging on it too. Its old news already, get over it!

its such a bad idea that every high end manufacturer is coming out with their own version now, like mercedes, audi, and even acura. once again BMW sets the bar

MANY PEOPLE Say that the idrive is a nuissance etc, and that it is hard,
But i think its easy to use , and very helpful in all its aspects, while stationery and driving, its conveinant aswell easy to use and well placed so even when theres a high speed motorway journey, you can still operate it, same goes for the idrives in the E65, E90 AND E61S
SO if theres an updated one it will be fine, but removing it all together would not be such a good idea!

Yes, you're right. The fact is that most journalists only have the car for a couple of days / hours / whatever and they're a lot more interested in other stuff (looks / performance / cost / interiour) to get used to, and don't (and won't and can't ) take the time (ahm....in my case.... less than an hour) to work out the I-Drive. It's also driving me nuts.
And yes...all manufacturers started using "THE BIG CONTROL
", but the ones inventing it just get critics over critics.

im so sick of reading reviews on BMW and reading about how great the car is but how bad the idrive is. thats the first question people ask me about my car, "hows the idrive heard it sucks." is it really that confusing? I think i learned how to use it by the time i got my car home from the dealer!

I think that the iDrive issue is greatly overstated but this opinion is so common that journalists are just scared to express positive opinion about it. In fact I was disapointed that I could not buy e60 without it. After using it for couple weeks I can't say it's perfect. I think it is very far from perfect and I am surprised that BMW couldn't make it any better! However if I had to buy e60 again, the iDrive would be on the top of my list.
