BTW they've corrected the article to state the 1 series was intoduced last year.

I don't think there a change in direction. They are building less of existing models and introducing new models for growth.

If BMW offers the 1 series 3-dr and 5-dr hatch in the U.S., now that's something of interest. Otherwise, it's all the same old stuff. With decrease demand, the only way to expand is to find new segment in the market.

The strategy may be to reduce supply slightly and balance that against the possibility of still shrinking demand in the mid-high end market.

It doesn't seem that the very high-end market has contracted at all - caught a blip on CNN last night reporting that Ferrari dealers sold more cars this past December than in the previous year.

Guess some Wall Streeters still have cash left for toys
