I have 2007 BMW 525 d with electronic gear selector lever. In the mornings when engine cold does not shift in to D only, but after a few tries up down left will go into D. During the day when engine is hot will work as no problems until next morning when cold temperatures then same same thing again.

Need some help if anyone has experienced the same problem and hope someone can help.

Thank you in advance

There is a service bulletin related to the GWS lever jumping back to "N" when attempting to select D or R - SIB 24 09 08. The solution was reprogramming. Although it doesn't mention the diesel models, keep in mind the SIB is from the US where they don't have diesel models.

This affected me generally on cold starts, and went away when I had the car software updated for a number of other issues (transmission/6FL operation).

Excerpt:

MODEL
E60, E61 (528i, 535i) with N52K/N54 and 6HP19TU from 03/07 up to 09/08

E60 (550i) with N62TU and 6HP26TU from 03/07 up to 09/08

SITUATION
The customer may complain that intermittently, after selecting the drive or reverse gears, the transmission jumps back to neutral. Both displays (in the Kombi and on the GWS) are switching from D (or R) to N at the same time.

No faults are stored in either the EGS transmission control module or in the GWS shifter.

I have not experiented anything like that, with my car I can not engage in D at all until I play with the shifter up down left right without force then after few tries it does engage on to D.

If I recall correctly, that's what it felt like... push up for D (selector always returns to middle position) but it would stay in N. Rarely affected me switching into R. After programming it went away, and now no longer applicable as I retrofitted to sport-auto transmission shifter.

Good luck getting it sorted out.

Had the car at a garage and after diagnosis they found that the selector gear switch was faulty and replaced it with a new one with a cost of £650.

I have just bought a 535d which has develoved the exact same fault.
I have had the oil and filter changed and they did a software update which hasn't sorted it so it's back in the garage today.
Having read this post I have asked them to change the selector.
Will let you know if it does the trick.
