bmw 'goodwill' a scam?

After only three hours of ownership of my e60 the steering began to squeek. Obviously I was straight onto the dealer who told me that this was'nt
covered under warranty but under the 'goodwill' policy they would rectify the fault. We also own a mini cooper that has had a number of faults
rectified under good will. However, I can't help feeling that if all these 'goodwill' gestures were collated it would expose BMW as having significant
reliability issues. On a mini forum more than half polled had had a steering pump replaced after total loss of power steering yet this is not a recall issue
as many have been replaced under 'goodwill' thus masking the problem by keeping the customer sweet. Am I going mad or is this a serious
manipulation of statistics?

I agree, i have seen allot of this and believe the have a reputation to keep and IMO are falling way short of a class leading manufacture that they used to be, they have massive floors in every model as far as i can see and i for one are not happy with the support or the dealers!!!

In my previous BMW, I've had "goodwill" repairs way beyond the 50k-mile warranty period. All in all, I think it was the good relationship I had with my SA and that particular dealership at that time. If it's not covered under warranty, and they fix it for you, I say be happy that you didn't have to shell out any $$$.
Was this a new or used car purchase?

"Goodwill" money comes from their advertising budget, so it may very well mask some faulty parts! 
After BMW had my car for 9 weeks, they threw me a nice chunk of Goodwill money, mainly because they didn't want to buy back my car!

You guys really need to buy a Porsche or two and then these seemingly insignificant squeaks would become a relief. The last time Porsche showed goodwill towards their customers was killing the production of the 914.
