Default Blown N54: Detailed Photos

I know this thread is overlapping a bit with my thread of the incident and my build log but I figured this was worthy of it's own.

Incident: https://5series.net/forums/e61-touri...ashion-144460/

Finally pulled my motor and was able to take some better pictures of the damage to the block. Engine is still being torn down, I will add pics once the valve cover and head is off.

For those familiar with engine internals and failures, if you would like some specific pictures to help in the diagnosis please let me know. This is my first experience inside an engine and am not sure exactly what to look for.

Evan

Finally got around to pulling the head off my blown motor, here are some updated pics.

You need an "extra long" T50 and T60 bit to get the main head bolts off. I didn't feel like paying a huge premium for "BMW Special Tools" or over priced bits sold locally. I ended up buying a set from AB Tools in the UK (via eBay). $25 and 8 days later these arrive. 3/8 drive which was tiny for the task of getting these bolts out but they worked flawlessly.

sorry your motor blew, but these are totally awesome photos. I do love some engine kablammo aftermath. I would 100% make a coffee table out of that.

check out the fracture cracked connecting rods, amazing engineering.

Amazing! A necessary sacrifice to build that ultime hybrid n54/m5 wagon. Been following along on m5board/n54tech, keep us all updated

I was driving today and thought... maybe i should trade in my E60 for a E61, and have a 850 as a project. The E61 would be a very nice daily. Even tho i dont think i need something like a wagon, I think regardless it would be a worthy investment since wagons seem to hold their value better than the sedans.

Im 23, and im like, maybe i should get a wagon lol. It feels odd, since i feel like i should be thinking about WRX STi, EVOs, ///M cars. Granted I want a M4, but thats at least 4 years into the future from now lol.

That about making some furniture of the block but it is simply too heavy and will be donated and recycled.

Hard to beat the X5 cargo capacity in a vehicle that drives (more or less) like a sedan.

You can always tune the N54 and have a wagon that can pull on all of those vehicles listed.

I am not a fan of the S85 in a daily driven vehicle.

Nope, internals will be 100% stock, just young/fresh. The replacement engine is already repaired/refreshed and installed. Engine will be started tomorrow.
