As promised, here's my Blackstone report. For the record: I had the oil changed @ 1200 miles by the dealer, and did my own change at 5K miles to Mobil 1 0/40. The report below is on the oil after my last change a little after 10K.

Why do you get your used oil tested? Realistically, what usefull information do you derive from getting the oil tested? Do the results affect how your oil change intervals will be in the future? Will you change your driving habits because of certain information?

Just wondering why the need for the testing. I always changed the oil on my X5 every 7500 miles, except for the first year I had the oil changed every 5K. I've never had any of my oil tested and my x5 is operating perfectly after 90K miles. I'm about to have the oil changed for the first time on my 550 and its just hitting 5K.

Thanks in advance for answering my questions and enlightening me on why people have their oil tested.

For me, it was a matter of curiosity. When BMW refused to change oil until the car said it needed a change and this did not happen for 17k miles, of course it made me wonder. So I ordered a test on the first change, then I did one after my own oil change 8k miles later. there was a notable improvement in the numbers. Instead of 'hmm, i wonder if my oil is protecting my engine from wear', I could took at the numbers and be satisfied that I was getting my money's worth out of paying out of my pocket for an oil change.

whether it makes any change in the longevity of the engine was not really of importance. I would do this in the future if I wanted to 1)know which oils work the best in my car, 2)determine what my oil change intervals should be.

I don't have software that allows me to edit Pdf files, or I'd post the results for our 325i. If I keep this 545i long enough, I will probably order one after the next two oil changes.

Yes. That's why I get the TBN - it tells how much life is left in the oil. Because of this report, instead of changing my oil at 5K miles, I will now do it at 6K. When I do that oil change, I imagine that the TBN test will give me a new OCI.

You can take a snapshot with the PDF reader, then edit out the parts you don't want to show and post it as a jpg.

...the johnson rods could be bad.
That doesn't sound like something I'd want.

No one ever does - that's why you need to get tested.

Did you change the oil filter as well?

I have heard that a high quality oil last close to forever the filters don't.
