2008 5 series production begins in March, starting week 10, so cars will start arriving mid April. If you want more power but still a good deal, why not get a 07 530?

I agree. If I was leasing, I'd definitely get an '07 530 because the lease deals are great on the 07s, but if you are buying and plan to keep it for a while (4+ years), I'd get an '08. With a purchase you have to think about resale value and you will have more room for negotiation than with a lease because dealers are less constrained.

There is no 2008 model until sept.
2008 model cars were announced in mid January for March 2007 production. The new models are the LCI models.

Yeah, your's was probably not a concern to them since you went back with your original order. However, if someone orders a 2007 then switches to a 2008, the dealer now has a 2007 on their lot that they have to sell. This is why they would keep the deposit. It'll make the buyer think twice, depending on the amount put down.
Fortunately, I've been with my dealer long enough that a deposit even isn't asked for.

This is a very interesting thread for me.

I'm waiting on delivery of my special order 2007 550i. I configured it just the way I wanted about 2 months ago, and the dealer called 2 days ago and its in the states and awaiting delivery from the center - probably on wednesday of next week.

Obviously, when i ordered it 2 months ago, the "refreshed" 2008 550 was not out yet. I ordered the sport package, but not the M kit. I think that the sport package on the '08 has the M-kit. I also think the '08 has active steering as part of the sport package, which I did not order either (trying to save $$$).

The upside is that I do not like the rims that appear on the '08 550 sport. I'm much happier with the rims on the '04-'07 sport packages.

The other factor is that I am leasing, and go the car priced at $58k for my lease (it has a $64k MSRP).

I've decided to keep the '07, as (1) the lease MF is probably better, (2) I like the older sport rims better, and (3) I dont want to wait 'til Sept. for my custom order.

You got a rockin' car lawguy. You'll be very happy. You can just take the money you saved on an 07 and mod it out now, to make it even better than an 08.

Actually, if you want to keep car long enough, '07 might be better. For one thing, engine and electronics have been around for some time so most issues have been ironed out. Appearance is not changing much in '08, so untrained eye won't even notice the difference. If you don't like turbo engine, '07 530 is more powerful that '08 528i so you'll enjoy it more. I kept my '97 M3 for 7 years and couldn't care less about resale value - I enjoyed the car.

Long ownership is about enjoyment, not about resale value. So if you plan to change cars in 3-4 years, then lease. If not, you can as well get '07 unless you really want 535i or some of the new features like USB or new shifter. '08 also makes more sense if you want to be the first guy in the block.

These cars are a lot like anything electronic anymore.....there's always something "newer and better" right around the corner. If you always wait for the newest/best.....you'll never buy!!

I think you are going to love your '07 Lawguy, and you got the added bonus of pretty decent lease terms...good mf right now. I ordered my car in February last year, it came in the end of April, and I haven't stopped grinning yet.....I NEVER fail to have fun driving.......good luck with your new car, and don't let your family catch you sleeping in the car, in the garage your first night!!
