Manual transmission for E60 can take BMW MTF LT-2 or LT-3, there is a sticker on the side of the transmission that says which to use. The part numbers for the manual transmission are the same for all year models and there have been no service bulletins indicating why BMW changed to LT-3 in later years. Many people think it was to improve fuel economy though since it is a bit thinner. You should be safe to use either LT-2 or LT-3 or one of the equivalent aftermarket fluids that meet LT-2 or LT-3 requirements. I have tried a few different oils and my favorite so far is Red Line D6 ATF. It is listed as LT-3 compatible, and I think it has the best stick feel of any oil I've used. Yes, it's ATF, but it will work in a stick shift transmission just fine. In fact, earlier BMW's often spec ATF fluid for the manual transmissions.

As stated it will say LT1, Lt2 or Lt3 on the side of the trans; I use redline D4 or D6(depending on the version) as an upgraded fluid as its compatible
