Default belt issue

on my 08 528i the serpentine belt shredded while driving. I replaced tensioner and belt. also oil housing and oil cooler gaskets. after all done cranked it sounds good but noticed the belt is hanging off the tensioner pulls about 1/8 inch. any one have any suggestions of what I may have done wrong or what to check to correct this problem. all pulleys felt good when I had the belt off.

Put the car on ramps and remove the protective shield.

Get under car, use a bright light to examine if the belt is on each pulley correctly and is sitting properly on the defined grooves.

Did you change the idler pulley connected to the alternator when you changed the belt? If the bearing on that old idler pulley was overly worn and it rocked back and forth, the belt might not sit correctly.

Is it possible the tensioner has a manufacturing fault?

You have a new tensioner where the belt is starting to walk off the pulley.

One indication when the tensioner needs to be replaced is when the belt starts to walk off the tensioner pulley.

If the belt is on all the pulley's correctly and the new tensioner is not defective, and all the other pulleys in the system are tight and not worn, then the belt has to be incorrect or stretched.

Are the other pulleys covered with oil and the belt is slipping?

belt is on all the pulleys correctly i cleaned the oil off of the pulleys before replacing the belt. it is only not sitting on the tensioner pulley correctly and I did put new tensioner on it but not the idler pulley that felt fine. tension on belt is good and not slipping. just thought I would see if any one knew of any thing else that may cause that problem before I take the tensioner off and order another one.

When I replace the tensioner and serpentine, I always replace the idler pulley.

The Idler pulley test I do is I spin the pulley. If it spins around a few times on its own, I know its old and worn.

When you get a new idler pulley and have it in your hand, try to spin it. Its doesn't spin by itself. The bearing is nice and tight.

If you are getting a new tensioner, get a new idler pulley to complete the system integrity.

You will also find the engine is quieter with a new idler pulley.
