OK, I have had this happen twice now in a week.
When I shut down the car, there is a rather loud (much louder than the fuel pump, and even louder as the SMG pump was) buzzing sounds from the rear right.
Its loudest around the gas tank lid.
It goes for ~20 - 30 sec and then stops. Any ideas?

I have heard this also. Sometimes I think I hear a selonoind or relay click before. Sounds like it is around the battery compartment in the right rear. Doesn't it have an in tank fuel pump? I have aslo noticed it after the car hasn't been running for a while. I might go and get something out it then lock it back, and hear it then.

Its always after I shut down the car, so why would the fuel pump run then?
There is another whirring sound for 1-2 s when I open the doors (hydraulics or fuel pump?), but this sound is definitely different and much louder. The first time I heard it, I was in my garage and thought it was not the car, but a plane overhead...

Very weird... and these sounds didnt exist on your old 545? I would think the SMG makes a lot more sound than the 6spd.

Fuel pump pressurising the system.
It's why if you put the wrong fuel in, you should not even unlock the car.
In the diesel even the start plugs pre-heat when you unlock it, so you can start and drive off straight away.

I get similar buzzes from my comfort seat actuators hugging and unhugging.

Anyway bmw seats are kinda crapy for me. No lateral support whatsoever. There is a hint though in the M5 M multifunction seats but that's all. Standard/sport/comfort all the same to me...tried them all in all various settings and i still wobble alot.
