Started to mildly panic last night when I got the low oil warning in the dash cluster. OMG Flick the I menu and it tells me serious damage to the engine will occur if operation continues. Damn Germans, can't they be less precise and insert "may" as opposed to "will." Sh!t. Forgot the oil specs so now driving to my local BMW centre. SA is super friendly on the mobile and says bring her in. No big deal. Produces a quart of synthetic oil and pours in the entire lot. SA says the warning was a routine one and its triggered when 1 quart is needed as a reserve. Nice touch indeed. I like those Germans. Automatic and no fooling around with a dip stick and no chance of overfilling. Apparently if I was monitoring this on I-drive, the alert was there from the 1/2 quart mark.

I've done 7K and SA maintains 1 qrt burnt is usual. Looking into the filling hole, oil coating the valve parts looked pretty good still. He said now would be a good time to change the oil. Maybe I will.

Just passing this along.

Nothing to be proud of, I know...

What oil did they use? 5W30 Synthetic, 10W40 Synthetic, or regular?

I bought my oil from the dealers and filled about 0,5 litre at 12 000 km:

Castrol Formula SLX 0W/30 LL04.

LL stand for Long Life, and it is a fully syntetic oil.

5W30 Synthetic from a plastic container. Castrol. They also have this in large barrells. Its late at night and I . . . . Nah, I can't do that. :'(

Interestingly, the SA mentioned that older 5s had the oil filter on top of the engine, which was a breeze to change. I'm thinking of changing mine, as I have a good jack with stands and change the Audi's oil all the time. Probably the day I swap for the winter tires.
