Replaced my SBK at a BMW Center. It seems to have cleared the seat belt and airbag malfunction warning lights.

I used INPA at home to read the error right after it occurred.

HTML Code:
          E R R O R M E M O R Y

Date: 27.08.2011 17:18:35

 JobStatus: OKAY

System time begin of error 2177.80 hours
System time end of error 2180.41 hours

Error code: 9A FF 60 80 06 45 98 00 07 4D 38 00 07 4F 77
=============================================================
When I had INPA connected, I chose not to clear the error since the error was still present. The error condition occurred over a 2 hour 36 minute time period. The airbag and seat belt malfunction lights stayed on over a few days, with normal vehicle stops/starts.

This is what the technician wrote: High resistance at SBK (Safety Battery Terminal) firing circuit. Performed diag with ISID. Fault Code 9AFF stored on SFZ. Resistance firing circuit, safety battery terminal, too high. Performed test plan and found fault currently present. Performed resistance check with ISID and check shows 2.8 ohms, Spec is 1.5 - 3.5 ohms. Currently in spec. Wiggled wires at SBK and rechecked 3 separate time. All times resistance in spec but changed from 2.8 to 2.5 to 2.3 ohms. Most likely poor connection at SBK. Need to remove center console to check wiring at SBK. Customer declined console removal. OK'd SBK replacement. Installed new SBK, reset time and initialized Active Steering. Cleared fault and road tested. Malfunction warning did not return. Operation OK at this time.

Part 61-12-6-929-324 Battery Cable (plus pole), quantity 1 ($221)
Labor for diagnostic and SBK replacement: 2.8 hours

So far, so good. Service Advisor stated that 9 out of 10 times, the fix for this error is to replacement the SBK at the battery. The wiring in the vehicle center console for the SBK very rarely goes bad. He advised skipping the center console wiring check unless the error returns. My original SBK is now replaced with a SBK of a newer design.

I have no problem working around airbag systems. I've removed steering wheels and door panels with airbags. I leave working *on* airbag systems to the professionals.

I've been using a non-OEM battery for a year and haven't had a single issue.
Everything I have read in the repair manual, charging diagrams, and theory of operation show nothing OEM specific.

All the registration does is clear the 'learned' charging pattern. If you don't reset it, the charging circuit will re-map the charge rate slowly. The work around for that is to remove the IBS sensor for a few trips.
Where is IBS sensor located? Please picture or OEM diagram.

The IBS is at the (red) Safety Battery Terminal. The IBS is item #1:

So my understanding is the one of the small connectors is needed to disconnect. Is it true?

Well I have replaced my battery today with Deka battery. It's special made battery to fit our cars perfectly. So it's 200 bucks battery. Anyway about registration, I drove on this battery right from battery warehouse (Leesburg VA) to my friend's shop in Leesburg, I drove about 2 miles something. So after a little digging around in the computer to find right menu with battery registration, we finally found it. So during registration, it asked when (date) was battery replaced, then it's automatically showed miles but it's less two miles (distance from warehouse to shop) then it showed on my dashboard. So it seems to me the car(computer) knows that was installed a new battery. So all this registration to me it's just BMW collecting money from their credulous costumers and the free durability information for their financing planning. It's nothing to do with battery charge.

Noted: I have used a small 12 V battery to keep setting current.

I was having the passenger restraint error as well. I bought a BST cable and did a test to see if it would clear. Unfortunately, I still get the error. In INPA I don't get the 9AFF error that vkhong got. I got the 93C3 which refers to the OC3 matt. Live and learn. Now I have a spare BST cable.
