So I noticed that my tail lights were not flashing when I unlocked the car and I had a warning on my HUD that the x drive and DSC were not functioning.Took it to the dealer and they replaced the battery-after only 29,000 kms on the vehicle.Covered under warranty, but I must say I have never over owning 7 cars had the battery replaced in one of them. Thoughts?

Do you do a lot of city driving and not a lot of highway? Do you leave the car sitting for extended periods? These cars are vampires. I travel a lot and don't do a ton of highway. After the dealer replaced mine way too soon, I put it on a battery tender if it sits for more that 4-5 days. I think this is not consistent though as others have said they never have this problem.

As previously posted BMWs and many newer complex automobiles have a high parasitic draw on batteries. Your colder climate can extract more demands. So it is not unusual that your 2 year old BMW Battery went flat - not unusual but certainly disappointing.

That said, my '07 sat for almost a month a couple of years ago - the battery never recovered and was also replaced under warranty.

I find that if I drive a long distance [say 100+ miles] , even just once a week, my battery cranks the car quicker than if I only drive a couple of miles a day consistently for a long time. Such was the case during this recent winter weather - where I barely drove 10 - 15 miles a week and my car spent several days each week under a pile of snow.

I'm sure BMW and other companies are looking for battery technology that measures up to the demands of all the technology in our cars. Until then I too recommend a battery tender connection to keep the battery "refreshed".

Yes I do a lot of city driving and not a lot of highway.I will monitor the situation before I go the route of the battery tender.BTW,I enjoy reading your pithy comments on this site!

The previous owner of my car had to replace the battery too only after 2 years. But strangely enough, with a lot of highway driving (100miles/day) and almost no city driving.

Before the 2 year death of those batteries, was a battery registration performed at the time they were installed?

As far as I know, authorized service should always register a new battery to let the power management systems "know" there is a new battery. Mine was, but it's always good to make sure and ask at the stealership.

I think the registration stuff is a bunch of BS the de3aler tells you to take your $$$. I had the battery replaced and "registered" with a brand new BMW/Douglas unit less than 2 years ago and last month it died. It was replaced under warranty but still BS for a $350 battery and $100 "registration". Go get a compatible battery (Autozone, sears, etc.) and DIY (most places install for free) for $100-$150 and be happy. These batteries usually have a 3yr no questions asked full replacement warranty. Even if it dies you will get another one free and still be richer by a few hundred dollars.

I've heard many complaints with premature battery failure. So, I have been using a BMW battery tender made be Deltran that I purchased from Gary at Newport BMW to add some extra insurance. The tender has been maintaining my battery at 80 percent level for the past year. I just leave it plugged in at night and at times when not in use.
