I was under the impression that changing the battery in the newer keys was pretty straightforward? See this link:

If the OP was asking about changing the battery in the key, it looks like it is fairly easy. The older diamond key is a completely different beast.

After a little more digging, it looks like there are at least 2 versions of the newer key fob:

One with a battery access door and one without. If you have the latter, it looks like you are stuck in the same boat as those with the older diamond key. You can either buy a new key or try to carefully cut apart your existing key and replace the battery.

Good luck.

Many thanks for everyone's replies,

It looks like the only route to go down is getting new keys from the stealer. I shall let you know how much they quote so you can laugh.

Quoted £135 per key... not worth it I will just have to live with this short range keys. Or I may try the method suggested of replacing the battery on one of the keys !

Wonder what was the outcome! I just hit the very same scenario here. a minor scratch on driver side got fixed and all of a sudden both key literally have no range to lock/unlock the car. Every thing was working great before handing the car to this workshop.... Also, the car has become fuel monger just after 4 days of work...

Dropped off my car today at the dealership and they initially expected one hour of service or so. No phone calls until near end of the day! Called in and they told me, they have no conclusion till the moment and that they will need to work on it for a bit more, however no definite time frame!!! Left with no loaner and probably no car till this mystery is solved

my 2006 E60 key fob went the same way, I had to replace the aerial amplifier and everything was working fine.
I did a search and found a new one on the continent very reasonably priced.
I did put new batteries in the two key fobs first but it didn't make any difference.
